Eritrean People's Democratic Party calls for aid to end human suffering in Eritrea

Flag of EritreaYet another SOS call is made by the Eritrean People's Democratic Party (EPDP) requesting world leaders, international organizations and other concerned bodies to act through their offices to help limit the extent of human suffering in Eritrea. Mr. Ammar, Chairman of the EPDP addresses the serious violations of human rights that are taking place at many levels in Eritrea in a message directed to the UN system. He draws attention to the grim conditions that Eritrean political prisoners are facing under the extreme cruel regime of President Isaias Afewerki.

Mr. Ammar requests with great urgency the implementation of 3 measures:

  1. That the UN system sends a Special Human Rights Rapporteur to Eritrea and together with a delegation of ICRC demand to visit Era-Ero and other dungeons;

  2. The rapid implementation of targeted sanctions against the regime in Eritrea by the European Union and the United States, in line with the UNSC Resolution 1907;

  3. The immediate release or court attendance of all political prisoners and prisoners of conscience in Eritrea by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and other human rights organizations. They are also requested to intensify their activities to reveal the real crimes against humanity in Eritrea that occurs on a daily basis and pressurize the Governments to help stop human tragedy befalling the Eritrean people.

One of the Eritrean prison guards, Mr. Eyob Bahta Habtemariam, who had been stationed in a high security-prison at Era-Ero, a torrid place north of Asmara, who has left Eritrea crossing the border to Ethiopia is narrating to the media his depressing eyewitness story. 35 very high government officials and journalists, amongst which the one-time Eritrean vice-president Mahmoud Sherifo; General Ogbe Abraha and the former Foreign Minister Mr. Haile Woldetensae, were imprisoned nine years ago. Fifteen have died due to medical neglect, food deprivation and excessive heat, 9 are reportedly disabled physically and/or mentally and 11 are being kept in handcuffs and leg chains 24 hours a day because they are considered as still being ‘aware of their situation'.

The situation becomes more severe every day. One can only hope that the international community recognizes the serious abuse of Human rights and act quickly to help resolve the extreme situations in Eritrea.
