Letter from the European Commission about civil society consultation in EC aid programming process

Brussels, 11 January 2007: The European Commission has responded to concerns raised by Eurostep about the lack of civil society consultation in the ongoing EC aid programming process.

In a letter to Eurostep Director Mr Simon Stocker, the Director-General of DG Development, Mr Stefano Manservisi, wrote that "the Commission gives a special consideration to the recommendations made by Eurostep in order to strengthen countries' NSAs' participation in the programming process. In particular, efforts are made to involve a wide range of legitimate, representative organisations and NAOs are approached in order to organise a schedule of consultations with the civil society".

He also wrote that "the Commissioner [Louis Michel] intends to write to a letter to all Delegations in the near future to capitalise on good examples found in the draft CSPs and to ensure that civil society involvement continues to stay high in the political agenda as part of political dialogue in its broadest sense."
