The pro-democratic protests in the Arab world draw a “striking parallel” with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, according to Mirjam van Reisen,Professor of International Social Responsibility at Tilburg University and member of the Coordinating Committee of Social Watch.
“Identical to the current crisis, the protests then were caused by social and political exclusion of the majority of people in their country, not as a reaction to the geo-political reality at the time,” wrote Van Reisen in an article for New Europe magazine.
