Buzek visits North Africa: welcomes no-fly zone over Libya

BUZEKpicThe President of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, visits Tunisia and Egypt between 17 and 21 March to hold talks with official authorities, the main actors of the democratic transition, representatives of civil society and students.

He will also discuss with leaders from Tunisia, Egypt and the Arab League how the resolution of the Security Council imposing a no-fly zone on Libya can be implemented.

Speaking about Thursday's UN Security Resolution President Buzek said that "I am glad and relieved that the international community has finally taken concrete action to stop Gaddafi killing his own people."

He went on to say: "The European Parliament has explicitly backed the possibility of a no-fly zone in its resolution of last Thursday."

Earlier Mr Buzek spoke about his programme in Tunisia and Egypt. Mr Buzek said: "First and foremost, I am here to pay tribute to the courage and determination of the Tunisian and Egyptian peoples. This is a revolution for human dignity. Second, I am here to listen: to the aspirations of the people. Third, I am here to offer Europe’s support wherever it is requested. Democracy can never be imposed from outside, but the road towards true democracy is long. We offer a new kind of partnership, oriented more towards values and people".
