Ahead of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Review Summit, taking place this Monday and Tuesday in New York, civil society organisations have risen their voice in regard to their expectations. In light of the upcoming MDG Review Summit, the international NGO network Social Watch launched a critical report titled “After the Fall: Time for a New Deal”, at the United Nations in New York. The report repeatedly points to the apparent gap between the commitments expressed by the international leaders and the actual actions that have been taken. According to Mirjam van Reisen, director of Europe External Policy Advisors (EEPA) and one of the report’s authors, “the summit demonstrates an overwhelming gap between rhetoric and reality”.
