The European Commission decided on Wednesday to end in 2014 development assistance to 19 emerging countries, including 11 Latin American nations, including Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela and Colombia. Instead, such aid will be provided to the poorest countries.
The countries left out will be Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Venezuela, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Uruguay, Iran, Thailand, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia and Maldives.
While the "EU will stop giving development aid, it will continue to cooperate" with those countries, in areas such as climate, equity and human rights, said European Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs.
