On 28 October, the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) announced that the 2011 Golden Pen for Freedom would be awarded to Swedish-Eritrean journalist Dawit Isaak. Isaak, co-founder of the first Eritrean independent newspaper, Setit, has incessantly fought for press freedom in Eritrea. Isaak particularly investigated the government’s abuse of power and called for democratic reform.
