Priorities of the French Council Presidency (July - December 2008)

Strasbourg, 27/02/08: On 19 February, the Prime Minister of France, François Fillon, outlined the priorities of his country's presidency of the Council of the EU to MEPs.

Speaking to members of the EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, the Prime Minister outlined the following four issues which France will prioritise during its Council presidency (July-December 2008):

  1. The fight against global warming
  2. Immigration and asylum rights
  3. European defence
  4. Health check on the Common Agriculutral Policy

On the issue of the fight against global warming, the French Prime Minister said, "We want Europe to set in legislation the objective to which we are all committed; to reduce gas emissions by 20%."
