EC/UN Partnership on Gender Equality launched

EC-UN Gender Partnership Participants
The European Commission, the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organisation (ITC-ILO) launched the EC/UN Partnership on Gender Equality for Development and Peace on 11 September 2007 in Brussels.

UNIFEM and ILO will work closely with EC delegations in twelve developing countries to identify practical approaches to further gender equality through new aid modalities. The twelve countries that have been chosen for pilot activities are Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Honduras, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Nicaragua, Papua New Guinea, Suriname and Ukraine. Researchers and programme coordinators from these countries were present at the launch and also at the three-day strategic workshop that took place in Brussels on 10-12 September.

Many attended the launch to hear about the programme from several high profile speakers, including from the EC: Mr Koos Richelle and Mr Luis Riera Figueras; from the UN family: Mr Eddy Laurijssen, Ms Joanne Sandler and Ms Benedetta Magri; and from AWID in Uruguay: Ms Cecilia Alemany.

EEPA is the secretariat of this partnership and functions as its central communication link. For further information, please contact Mirjam van Reisen.
