Campaign "Against Domestic Violence"

Brussels, 2 June 2006: A presentation of Hurriyet’s campaign against domestic violence was held on Wednesday 31 May at the European Parliament.

Worldwide, one woman in four suffers from domestic violence. In Turkey, one-third of families are concerned. Hurriyet, a Turkish newspaper, launched a campaign to raise awareness, “domestic violence must not be tolerated nor regarded as normal”. Alongside the campaign, training sessions are organized. Although the new Turkish Penal Code (TPC), which offers greater protection for women against violence in the family, entered into force in June 2005, its implementation varies from region to region. In Germany in May 2005, the campaign is to be extended in Europe. “We should tackle this issue on European level. All the governments and the European Institutions need to work in close cooperation”, says Emine Bozkurt (MEP).

“With this campaign which tackles one of the main social problems in Turkey, i.e. domestic violence, we intend to protect families and to support family without resort to violence”, says Vuslat Dogan Sabanci (CEO of Hurriyet).
