International symposium called for action to prevent sexual violence in conflicts

unfpalogo.gifBrussels, 21-23 June 2006: Last week the European Commission, UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) and the Belgian government jointly organised an international bdc.gifsymposium on “Sexual Violence in Conflicts and Beyond”.

On the final day of the symposium the participant stakeholders drafted a declaration which calls on government, international organisations and civil society to prioritise the issue of sexual eu_pic.jpgviolence in all humanitarian, peace building and development efforts in countries affected by conflict. The symposium highlighted the importance of including strategies on how to prevent gender-based violence in national action plans and that this inclusion would be considered as an indicator of good governance.

The declaration states “that there must be zero tolerance for acts of gender-based violence, and zero tolerance for complacency by governments and other institutions responsible for the safety and well-being of woman, men and children affected by conflict”. Moreover the statement outlines some 20 actions to be taken, including linking of development funding to ensure continuity if sexual violence prevention, the ending of impunity for perpetrators and the strengthening of local and national surveillance systems.
